# Desktop app

> The Reason desktop app for macOS and Linux runs the CLI worker that lets Sessions use this computer. Install it, check it, and see what it adds.

The Reason desktop app is a native app for macOS and Linux. It installs and runs the CLI worker, the same worker that `reason connect` starts, so Sessions can use this computer. It also sets up the desktop, computer-use and browser-use components that a Session needs for those tasks.

## What you will have

* The Reason app on this computer, signed in to your Workspace.
* This computer connected, so `reason "PROMPT"` and Sessions that target it can run here.
* A status check that shows which components are ready.

## Install

Download the build for your system from [reasonmachines.com/download](https://reasonmachines.com/download). Builds are listed for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, and for Linux as AppImage, `.deb` and `.rpm`. A platform without a release yet says so on that page.

Or install the CLI from a terminal, which also runs the worker:

```bash theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://reasonmachines.com/install.sh | bash
reason login
reason connect
```

## Check it

```bash theme={null}
reason desktop status
```

The output lists each component as `ready`, `missing`, `outdated` or `needs_permission`:

* `desktop`: the desktop environment a Session uses.
* `open_computer_use` and `open_browser_use`: computer use and browser use.
* `browser` and `browser_extension`: the browser the Session drives.

A component that is not `ready` names what it needs. Run `reason desktop install` to set it up again. It is safe to run more than once.

To keep this computer to files, shell and terminal only, run `reason desktop minimal`. Desktop components are then not added on install or update.
